Famous educator V.N.Karazin accordance with charter of Tsar Alexander I. established one of the oldest universities in East Europe, V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University, in November 1804. Later on 29th January 1805 they organized an opening ceremony. The university gave powerful impetus to the emergence of Kharkiv as a major scientific and cultural center and an academic hub of Ukraine. Today it is one of the renowned universities of the world and rated as the best Ukrainian classical universities.
The history of V.N.Karazin University is constituent of the intellectual, cultural and spiritual history of Ukraine. Many famous researchers, scholars and educators have started their career from this university, which of them are three Nobel Prize laureates; the economist S.Kuznets, the biologist I.Mechnikov and the physicist L.Landau.
Kharkiv University is associated with the first Ukrainian newspaper and journals and the first scientist society. The activities of University developed Kharkiv into a major scientific, industrial and cultural center and many Kharkiv streets named as the professors, researchers and alumni of the University.
At present time, V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University with its 200 years history is a leading research and educational institution in Ukraine.
